Closing volume is considered to be a useful measure-ment in evaluating early obstructive plumonary disease with changes in peripheral airways. In this study we have examined the relation between closing volume and body characteristics in 713 healthy subjects ranged from 20 to 79 year-old using a computerized spirometer (FUDAC 80), and have derived a prediction equation with a multiple regression analysis method. Our data showed that CV/VC, CC/TLC and CC/FRC increasedlinearly with age, while ERV-CV and FRC-CC decrea-sed with age in both male and female. Closing volume was shown to highly correlate to the biological characteri-stics. A prediction equation was derived from the mea-surements with a multiple regression analysis at the confident level of higher than 99%, and the calculated value obtained from the resultant equation showed a good accordance with the measured values. We consider this prediction equation to be highly reliable and clini-cally applicable in evaluating pulmonary function.
