  • Look Inside

We examined the anterior ocular segment of 52 cataractous eyes of 32 patients with atopic dermatitis using an ultrasound biomicroscope (UBM) . The ages ranged from 12 to 37 years, average 23.2 years. There was no eye with clinically detectable retinal detachment. Detachment of the nonpigmented ciliary epithelium was detected by UBM in 6 eyes of 4 patients. It was located in the pars plicata in 2 eyes and extended to the pars plana in 4 eyes. Findings suggestive of break of the ciliary epithelium were present in 2 of these eyes. Retinal detachment developed following cataract surgery in one of the two eyes. The findings illustrate that ultrasound biomicroscopy may be of value in predicting retinal detachment following surgery for atopic cataract.
