Abstract Purpose: To report the prognosis of surgery for epiretinal membrane with or without peeling of epifoveal membrane.

Cases and Method: This reetrospective study was made on 75 eyes of 98 patients who received surgery for epiretinal membrane. Epiretinal membrane including the foveal region was removed in 67 eyes. Membrane in the epifoveal region was spared in 8 eyes with marked adherence between the fovea and epiretinal membrane. Cases were followed up for 5 months or over. Visual acuity was evaluated as logMAR. Central retinal thickness(CRT)was measured using optical coherence tomography(OCT).

Results: Maximal visual acuity after surgery averaged −0.02±0.07 in eyes with sparing the fovea and 0.04±0.19 in eyes without. Visual acuity improved significantly from the value before surgery in both groups. Maximal central retinal thickness averaged 360.5±63.6 μm in eyes that received peeling of epifoveal membrane. It decreased significantly from the value before surgery. There was no difference in central retinal thickness in eyes that received membrane peeling sparing the fovea.

Conclusion: Visual acuity improved after surgery for epiretinal membrane sparing the fovea.
