Abstract Purpose: To report the effect and safety of peroral administration of adenosine triphosphate disodium hydrate(ATP-2Na)for asthenopia.

Cases and Method: This clinical study was made on 40 outpatients who complained of asthenopia. The series comprised 5 males and 35 females. The age ranged from 25 to 87 years, average 62.5 years. Each patient received ATP-2Na at the daily dosis of 200 to 300 mg. A questionnaire was used to evaluate the state of asthenopia and the other systemic and mental fatigue. The findings were analyzed using visual analog scale(VAS).

Results: A total of 31 cases responded to the questionnaire after treatment for one month, reporting significant improvements in asthenopia as well as systemic and mental fatigue(p<0.005). In 26 cases who continued the treatment for 3 months, asthenopia as well as systemic and mental fatigue improved significantly(p<0.005). Side effects were reported in 3 out of 33 cases who continued the treatment for one month, including diarrhea in 2 cases and nausea in one. The side effects disappeared after discontinuation.

Conclusion: The present study shows that peroral ATP-2Na may induce early improvement of asthenopia as well as systemic and mental fatigue.
