Sisomicin (SISO) is a new aminoglycoside anti-biotic having a wide antibacterial spectrum. Pre-clinical studies on the 0.3% SISO eye drops were carried out as follows before starting clinical trials in external infections of the eye.

( 1 ) Harmful effect on the rabbit eye to test the safety : SISO eye drops and saline were instil-led into the right and left eye of 4 rabbits, respec-tively, 9 times a day for 5 days. No clinical changes were observed in all eyes by slitlamp examination. Scanning electron microscopy of the corneas ex-hibited no particular changes of the epithelial surface cells.
