  • Look Inside

Carbocyclic oxetanocin G (C.OXT -G) is a newly synthesized antiviral agent which has potent anti-herpes simplex virus (HSV) effects in vitro and in vivo. We used C. OXT-G eye drops for patients with herpetic keratitis and obtained the following results. 1) Thirty-four eyes in 24 patients who had either dendritic or geographic ulcers were treated with 0.1% C.OXT-G eye drops 5 times a day. All eyes were cured with an average healing time of 4.8±2.2 days.

2) The eye drops were effective for ulcers which were induced by steroids or other immunosuppressive drugs. 3) A combination of C.OXT-G with steroid drops was also effective in 20 out of 23 eyes in the treatment of stromal herpetic keratitis without the appearance of ulcers. 4) No side effects were seen in any patients. From these results C.OXT-G eye drops seem to be a promising drug for the treatment of herpetic keratitis in humans.
