An evaluation was made of Tobramycin as an antibiotic for preoperative sterilization of the cul-de-sac in ocular surgery. The experiment was done after some preliminary trials in animals and in humans.

A Tobramycin-eye-drop prepared in saline at the concentration of 0.3% was instilled into rabbit eyes 5 to 9 times a day for 3 to 7 days. It caused no clinical changes of the eye. Scanning electron microscopy of the cornea showed a slight exfoliation of the epithelial surface cells, but it did not seen to be harmful.

Rabbits were inoculated into the cornea with Pseudomonas aeruginosa suspended in mucin solution.
