Abstract. Purpose:To report the effect of single instillation of bimatoprost on the circulation of normal optic nerve head. Cases and Method:This prospective study was made on 8 healthy adults. The series comprised 4 males and females each. The age ranged from 24 to 44 years and averaged 34 years. Refraction ranged from zero to -7 diopters, average -3.25 diopters. Each subject was instilled with 0.03% ophthalmic solution of bimatoprost in one eye. The fellow eye was instilled with physiological solution and served as control. Circulation in the optic nerve head was measured by laser speckle flowgraphy for each quadrant. Findings were analyzed by double blind method. Results:Blood flow in the optic nerve head increased significantly in the temporal quadrant 90 minutes after instillation. There was no change after 180 or 270 minutes nor in other quadrants. Intraocular pressure decreased significantly and ocular perfusion pressure increased significantly 180 and 270 minutes after instillation. Conclusion:Circulation in the optic nerve head may increase after instillation of bimatoprost.
