Abstract. Background:Eye camp activities have been conducted since 1971 by the Association for Ophthalmic Cooperation in Asia(AOCA)which is a non-governmental organization(NGO). Purpose:To report and compare the eye camp activities in Nepal and India. Activities:Twelve volunteers, including 6 ophthalmologists, were sent to Bhojpur in Nepal in 2007. They saw patients, prescribed eyeglasses, and performed cataract surgeries in a local school that served as makeshift eye clinic. Eight volunteers, including 4 ophthalmologists, were sent to Dharamsala in India in 2008. They saw patients and performed cataract surgeries in a small hospital that had only one ward for tuberculosis. Results:In Bhojpur,778 patients were seen,200 prescriptions were issued for eyeglasses, and 61 cataract surgeries were performed. In Dharamsala, about 400 patients were seen and 77 cataract surgeries were performed. In both locations, cataract surgery was performed using limited medical resources. Conclusion:Eye camp activities sponsored by AOCA was meaningful from humanitarian point of view.
