Most laparoscopic colorectal surgery require a small incision in the abdomen. Hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery (HALS) is feasible for colorectal disease, because a surgeon can insert his hand into the abdomen through the incision. We performed 30 cases of hand-assisted laparoscopic colorectal surgery. HALS is acceptable for many surgeons who have a lot of experience in open surgery, but not in laparoscopic surgery. This technique allows the surgeons to quickly and safely perform such procedures as mobilization and resection of the colon or division and ligation of the vessels.
