  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

In 1996, the authors introduced hand-asssisted laparoscopic surgery (HALS) to Japan. HALS was carried out during gastric-tube construction as a part of total endoscopic surgery for esophageal cancer. Laparo-scopic surgery without hand assistance (LS) mainly depends upon endoscopic vision, whereas HALS also obtains tactile sensation and free movement of the surgeon's left hand in the abdominal cavity. The authors, therefore, recognize HALS as an ultimate robot arm which potentially possesses perfect tactile sensation and free movement ability.
