  • Look Inside

We quantitated cytokines, or interleukins (II) , in the tear fluid in 46 patients with allergic conjunctival diseases. The series comprised allergic conjunctivitis 13 cases, atopic keratoconjunctivitis 13 cases, and vernal keratoconjunctivitis 20 cases including 14 cases of atopic dermatitis. Another series of 12 healthy persons served as control. Levels of interleukins were measured using ELISA method. There was no difference in the levels of 11-2 among the four groups. Level of 11-4 was significantly higher in vernal keratoconjunctivitis than allergic conjunctivitis and controls. It was also higher in cases of vernal keratoconjunctivitis with atopic dermatitis than in those without. There was no difference between vernal and atopic keratoconjunctivitis. Level of 11-5 was significantly higher in cases of vernal keratoconjunctivitis with or without atopic dermatitis than in the other 3 groups. The findings show the difference in tear levels of 11-4 and 11-5 among different allergic conjunctival diseases.
