Nature and origin of "glass-wool" vitreous opacities in familial primary amyloidosis were studied by electron microscopy. The patient, 39-year-old male, had typical glass-wool vitre-ous opacities and white deposits on narrowed retinal blood vessels. The eyes were enucleated and fixed 3 hours postmortem.

The glass-wool opacities were due to deposi-tion of amyloid fibrils in the vitreous. The amyloid showed greenish-yellowish birefringen-ce on polarization microscopy after congo red staining. By electron microscopy the amyloid deposits were masses of thin and non-branch-ing fine fibrils of around 100Å in diameter.
