Abstract. Purpose:To report the effect of intravitreal injection of bevacizumab befor vitrectomy for proliferative diabetic retinopathy(PDR). Cases and Method:This retrospective study was made on 16 eyes of 13 patients with PDR. The series comprised 11 males and 5 females. The age averaged 56 years. Photocoagulation had been performed on 15 eyes. Retinal neovascularization was present in 8 eyes, rubeosis iridis in 10 eyes, and traction retinal detachment in 6 eyes. The eyes received intravitreal injection of 1.25mg bevacizumab 3 to 4 days before vitrectomy. Another series of 28 eyes of 23 patients, who received vitrectomy for PDR, served as control. Visual acuity was evaluated in terms of logMAR. Results:Injection of bevacizumab induced regression of disc and retinal neovascularization, and resulted in lesser hemorrhage during surgery. Visual acuity improved from 0.74 to 0.46 in bevacizumab group and from 1.22 to 0.85 in controls. There was no complication throughout. Conclusion:Intravitreal injection of bevacizumab induces regression of neovascularization and results in safer surgery.
