Abstract. Purpose:To report the current status about retinopathy of prematurity(ROP). Cases and Method:This retrospective survey was made on 471 eyes of 236 premature infants seen during 3 years through 2004 in 4 institutions in Nagasaki Prefecture. By definition, they weighed 1,500g or less at birth. Statistical analysis was made to identify risk factors for ROP. Results:ROP was present in 289 eyes of 141 infants(61%). Treatment had to be performed for 77 eyes with advanced ROP. Severe cases tended to have gestational age of 25 to 28 weeks and birthweight between 750 and 1,000g. Low birthweight, short gestational age, and history of blood transfusion were identified as significant risk factors for ROP. Conclusion:Blood transfusion is a risk factor for progression of ROP.
