Abstract. Purpose:To report a case of systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE)who developed serous retinal detachment that failed to respond to high-dose corticosteroid. Case:A 51-year-old female presented with relative central scotoma in the left eye. She had been treated for SLE since 8 years before. Findings and Clinical Course:Her corrected visual acuity was 1.5 right and 0.5 left. Serous retinal detachment with retinal vasculitis was present in both eyes. It resolved after increased dosis of peroral prednisolone only to recur 3 weeks later. It failed to respond to pulsed corticosteroid and turned into bullous retinal detachment. Serous retinal detachment resolved after retinal photocoagulation without recurrence until 10 months after her initial visit. Conclusion:Serous retinal detachment in SLE patient may fail to respond to high-dose corticosteroid. Early retinal photocoagulation may be an effective means of treatment.
