Abstract. Purpose:To report findings by optical coherence tomography(OCT)as correlated with pre-and postoperative visual acuity in idiopathic macular hole. Cases and Method:This study was made on 31 eyes of idiopathic macular hole treated by vitreous surgery. The series comprised 10 male and 21 female eyes. The age ranged from 51 to 78 years, average 67 years. Surgery was performed 0.1 to 9 months, average 2.7 months, after presumed onset. Cataract surgery was also performed on 27 eyes. Cases were followed up for 1 year or longer. Results:Positive correlation was present between visual acuity before and after surgery. Final visual acuity was positively correlated with OCT findings of borderline between inner and outer segment of visual cells. It was negatively correlated with the size of macular hole. Conclusion:Good visual acuity, small macular hole, and distinct borderline between inner and outer segment of visual cells by OCT are prognostic signs of good final visual acuity.
