Abstract. Purpose:To evaluate the effect of different types of acrylic intraocular lens(IOL)on cultured lens epithelial cells. Method:Lens epithelial cells were obtained from white rabbits aged 8 weeks. The cells were sprinkled over IOLs placed in the media. After 96 hours, the cells were stained by hematoxylineosin and were examined with a biomicroscope. Attention was paid to the cell population and cell shape adherent to collagen membrane and IOLs. Four types of IOL were used including hydrophobic and hydrophilic ones. Results:Cells adherent to hydrophilic IOLs were characterized by lesser population and by better sheet formation over collagen membrane. Cells adherent to hydrophobic IOLs were characterized by higher population and by lesser sheet formation over collagen membrane. Cultured cells showed different shapes depending on the type of IOLs. Conclusion:Hydrophilic and hydrophobic IOLs exert differences in cultured cell types and in incidence of secondary posterior capsular opacity.
