Abstract. Purpose:To report the effect of experimentally produced damage to the intraocular lens(IOL)by Nd:YAG laser. Method:Nd:YAG laser was applied to produce cracks in the optics of spherical IOLs of +20D in power. Two types of cracks, local and diffuse ones, were produced. The IOLs were set in a model eye to assess the area of damage within 3.0 mm and 4.5 mm from the center. Theoretical effect to visual acuity was calculated from these values. Results:Calculated visual acuity decreased along with increase in damaged area of IOL. Conclusion:Estimated visual acuity decreased in eyes with excessive cracks by Nd:YAG laser. Negative effect to the visual acuity may be minimal in the presence of cracks observed in actual clinical practice.
