  • Look Inside

We observed two cases of acute visual disturbance due to acquired syphilis. The first case,a 85-year-old female, presented with bilateral blurring of vision since one week before. She had had visual acuity of 0.6 right and 0.8 left one year before. Her visual acuity was 0.1 right and 0.2 left. Both eyes showed iritis, retinochoroidal atrophy, and macular edema. Serological test led to the diagnosis of syphilic chorioretinitis. Antisyphilitic treatment was initiated. The visual acuity improved to 0.7 right and 1.0 left 2months later. The second case,a 36-year-old male, presented with blurring of vision in his left eye since one week before. He had had skin eruptions since 3 weeks before. The corrected visual acuity was 1.5 right and 0.5 left. The serum and cerebrospinal fluid proved positive for syphilis. Dermatologically,he was diagnosed with stage 2 syphilis. He was treated with antisyphilitic drugs and corticosteroid. The left visual acuity improved to 1.0 one week later.
