　はじめに

　近年，抗生剤の開発と進歩によりBezold膿瘍に遭遇する機会は稀になっている。しかし，本疾患は治療の時期を逸すると致命的になる恐れもあり，現在でも慎重に対処すべき疾患といえる。今回われわれは，急性上気道炎を契機に乳様突起炎が急性増悪しBezold膿瘍を形成したと考えられるダウン症の1例を経験したので，若干の文献的考察を加えて報告する。

A 13-year-old child with Down's syndrome was suffering from a swelling of the right upper neck and fever. CT revealed a soft tissue density in the bilateral mastoid air cells and abscess formation deep in the right sternomastoid muscle. Mastoi-dectomy and drainage of the abscess were perform-ed under general anesthesia. A bone defect was existed inside of the wall of the mastoid process and was connected to the abscess. After surgery, a large dose of antibiotics was administrated and local irrigation was carried out carefully. The patient showed uneventful recovery.
