  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Environmental chemicals, such as organophos-phate pesticides and organic solvents, have been reported to be implicated in the etiology of Behçet' s disease.

We evaluated 25 patients with Behçet's disease who had been exposed to toluene and compared with 30 healthy subjects who had also been exposed to toluene. We quantified venous blood levels of benzaldehyde and urinary hippuric acid, which are the metabolites of toluene. The normal range of benzaldehyde and hippuric acid were less than 4.1 μg/ml and 1000 mg/l respectively. The mean value of benzaldehyde was 5.34±3.88 μg/ml in Behget's disease group and 1.43±1.27 μg/ml in the control group. This difference was significant (p<0.05). The concentration of hippuric acid were within normal range both for the patient and control groups.

The plasma benzaldehyde level was significantly elevated in patients with Behget's disease, if the patient has had contact with toluene. This test also promises to be of value in the diagnosis of Behget' s disease in cases of uveitis of unclarified nature.
