  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We evaluated the corneal endothelium in 74 eyes, 52 patients, with uveitis. The series included 33 eyes with nongranulomatous uveitis (serous iritis 17 eyes, Behget's disease 16 eyes) and 41 eyes with granulomatous uveitis (Harada's disease 8 eyes, ocular sarcoidosis 6 eyes, glaucomatocyclitic crises 9 eyes, herpes zoster iridocyclitis 7 eyes and others). We used contact type wide-field specularmicroscope in tne evaivation.

The mean endothelial cell size was larger than in control in 50% of cases with granulomatous uveitis The cell size in nongranulomatous iritis was the same as in control. There was no difference in the endothelial cell size between the central area and the posterior sector of the cornea. There was a tendency for the cell size to increase in the area with mutton fat deposits.

The findings seemed to indicate that the retrocor. neal mutton fat deposits exerts a major influence on the corneal endothelial cells.
