要約　目的：老人ホームに入居している高齢者での知能指数（IQ）と視力との関係の報告。対象と方法：当眼科に往診を依頼された18例を対象とした。男性2例，女性16例で，年齢は73～98歳（平均85歳）である。近見視力と知能指数を検査した。15例には18か月後に再検査をした。結果：18例での知能指数は，11歳以上が6例（33％），2～11歳が9例（50％），2歳以下が3例（17％）であった。18か月後の検査では，脳または精神疾患による知能指数が2～11歳の7例中，改善4例，不変2例，低下1例であった。知能指数の改善は視力の改善者に多かった。2歳以下の3例では視力測定の不能者が多く，知能指数が不変であった。結論：脳または精神疾患で知能指数が2～11歳の高齢者では，18か月後の知能指数と視力双方の改善者が多く，知能指数が2歳以下では視力測定不能者が多かった。

Abstract.　Purpose：To report the relationship between visual acuity and intelligence quotient（IQ）in senile persons staying in institutions. Cases and Method：This study was made on 18 persons who were seen as house visits. The series comprised 2 males and 16 females. The age ranged from 73 to 98 years,average 85 years. Each person was examined for near visual acuity（VA）and IQ. Fifteen persons were reexamined 18 months later. Results：IQ was over 11 years in 6 persons（33％）,between 2 and 11 years in 9（50％）,and below 2 years in 3（17％）. When examined 18 months later,IQ improved in 4,remained in 2 and deteriorated in 1 in 7 persons with initial IQ between 2 and 11 years. Improvement in IQ was frequent in those with improved VA. Three persons showed unchanged in IQ when initial IQ was below 2 years. Conclusion：Improvement in IQ and VA ran parallel when caused by cerebral or mental disorders.
