Abstract Purpose:To report the present status of patients using wheelchairs with particular emphasis on ocular and systemic disorders.

Cases and Methods:This retrospective study included 26 patients using wheelchairs in Akeo Eye Clinic during the past 91-month period. The series comprised 9 men and 17 women. The age ranged from 54 to 94 years, with an average of 77 years, at the end of the follow-up. Visual acuity(VA)and visual field with the Humphrey field analyzer(HFA)were examined.

Results:VA was more than 0.5 and not severely impaired in the right eyes of 20(83.3%)patients and in left eyes of 14(58.3%)patients. HFA showed MD values of more than−15 dB in the right eyes of 12(92.4%)patients and in left eyes of 9(69.3%)patients. There were 9(34.6%), 9(34.6%), 7(26.9%)patients with cataract, normal tension glaucoma, and retinal disease, respectively. Cerebral vascular problems, such as hemorrhage and infarction, and mental disorders, such as dementia and Parkinson's disease, were present in 10(38.5%)and 8(30.7%)patients, respectively.

Conclusions:VA and MD values of patients using wheelchairs because of systemic disorders including cerebral or mental diseases, were not severe. We suggested that being barrier-free was necessary to come to the outpatient department and carry out detailed examinations of visual functions by HFA.
