Abstract. Purpose:To report the outcome of cataract surgery with implantation of colored intraocular lens(IOL)in a patient of retinitis pigmentosa. Case:A 50-year-old female presented with impaired vision in her right eye. She had been diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa 10 years before. Findings and Clinical Course:Corrected visual acuity was 0.3 right and 1.2 left. The right eye showed posterior subcapsular cataract. Both eyes showed typical findings of retinitis pigmentosa. The fundus lesion was more advanced in the right eye than the left. Visual acuity remained unchanged during the following 6 years. The right eye then received phacoemulsification and aspiration with implantation of colored IOL. Surgery lasted 6 minutes. Humphrey field analyzer showed MD value of −28 dB prior to surgery. Right visual acuity improved to 0.7 with MD of −30 dB 10 months after surgery. It decreased to 0.3 with MD of −30 dB 18 months after surgery. It further decreased to 0.05 with MD of −31 dB 55 months after surgery. The posterior fundus showed degenerative findings. The right eye showed severely impaired color vision. Visual acuity in the left eye remained 1.2 throughout. Conclusion:This case illustrates that degenerative lesion in the posterior fundus may progress following cataract surgery with implantation of colored IOL in an eye with retinitis pigmentosa.
