Abstract. Purpose:To report the state of color vision in patients with advanced retinitis pigmentosa. Cases and Methods:This study was made on 3 cases of retinitis pigmentosa. The age ranged from 40 to 57 years. Corrected visual acuity was counting fingers and 0.03,hand motion in both eyes, and 0.03 and 0.1 respectively. They were presented with a photograph showing 5 apples in a brown basket, and were asked to name the color of each apple as a numeric combination of tone, hue and brightness. Results:Healthy persons identified 3 apples as red(R3vv)(60%)and 2 apples as orange(R3lt,Olvv)(40%). The patients described,by monocular observation, the color of apples as purple, green, yellow, orange and, occasionally,as red. Conclusion:Patients with advanced retinitis pigmentosa with macular involvement may be affected by impairment of L,M and S cones resulting in seeing colored objects as monochromatic ones.
