　MRIによる拡散強調画像から健常者の大脳白質内の水分子の拡散係数（apparent diffusioncoefficient，ADC）を測定し，拡散異方性の評価をとおして加齢による変化を検討した。65歳末満の壮年群（9例）に比し65歳以上の老年群（12例）では，側脳室周囲の前方白質や後方白質で左右方向（神経線維に垂直な方向）のADCが亢進し，拡散異方性の低下がみられた。特に，前方白質では年齢や脳萎縮の程度と有意な相関関係が得られたが，重回帰分析からは脳萎縮の程度が拡散異方性の低下に大きく寄与していると考えられた。一方，脳梁については加齢によるADCや拡散異方性の変化を認めなかった。大脳白質におけるADCの亢進や拡散異方性の低下は，線維間空隙の拡大や髄鞘，軸索の変性，脱落などの組織構築の変化を示唆し，特に加齢による神経細胞脱落に関連した二次的な神経線維の変性，消失を反映していることが推測された。

To investigate age-related changes of diffusional anisotropy in the cerebral white matter, we per-formed diffusion-weighted MRI studies in 21 normal subjects aged 25 to 96 years.

The anisotropic rations (ARs), defined as the apparent diffusion coefficients perpendicular to the nerve fibers to those parallel to the nerve fibers, were significantly higher in elderly than in young subjects in the anterior and posterior white matter surrounding the lateral ventricle. Moreover, significant correlation between age and AR was found in the anterior white matter.
