This study qualitatively investigated how nurses have worked as coordinators to collaborate with many types of specialists at emergency evacuation shelters at the time of the Kumamoto earthquake. This study shows seven categories based on interviews concerning “the reality of coordination from the viewpoint of nursing” to six nurses who coordinated activities at emergency evacuation shelters. Seven categories are shown below:“ Supporting independence of daily living, and connect people with the disaster area,” “supporting the supporter in the disaster area unconcernedly,” “grasping and adjusting an efficient daily life environment,” “recognizing the need to share the role with many types of specialist,” “flexible judgment to distribute the limited resources” “sensing danger, and ensuring security,” “information sharing to prevent a burden on victims.”

This study showed two important viewpoints, namely, mutual relationships with individual victims and concerns for the entire living environment of the emergency evacuation shelters. Results suggested communication skills based on these two viewpoints and the development of human resources with a high level of problem-solving abilities with a high-angle view towards future education.
