Purpose: This study aimed to elucidate the perception gap of practical wisdom in nursing between professional nurses with more than 20 years of experience and pre-professional nurses with lesser experience.

Methods: A nationwide internet survey was conducted via an open-ended questionnaire, which targeted nurses to identify the practical wisdom they believed would help them work better.

Results: The free descriptive answers obtained were coded and classified into five superordinate categories, 15 categories, and 85 codes of practical wisdom in nursing. The perception gap between the professional and pre-professional nurses was verified via a chi-squared test conducted on the category level data. It was found that the former regarded nurses' attitude as important, while the latter emphasized practical know-how.

Conclusion: When practical wisdom is passed down to pre-professional nurses, the know-how on problem-solving must be taught. Furthermore, a positive attitude should be nurtured to help them work better.
