A Nutrition Support Team (NST) is a multi-disciplinary team that examines nutritional status, nutrition intake environment, etc. of patients and supports the patients' nutrition environment. With the introduction of NSTs, effects such as a decrease in catheter-related infections and cost reduction have been reported. Even in Japan, while the number of NSTs is increasing annually, the introduction of a NST or nutritionists in the ICU is still under development. High-quality evidence regarding the introduction of NSTs or full-time nutritionists in the ICU is limited. Will a NST or a full-time nutritionist be effective in a limited department such as an ICU? In this report, we summarize existing evidence about NSTs and full-time nutritionists in the ICU and also explain the barriers and counter-measures against their introduction.
