Twenty to 80% of patients with critical illness have dysphagia. They have longer ICU and hospital lengths of stay, more days requiring mechanical ventilation, and higher mortality compared to their counterparts without dysphagia. There are many etiologies of dysphagia in patients in the ICU, which is referred to as ICU acquired dysphagia. Some of these etiologies are specific to patients in the ICU, such as tracheal intubation, delirium, etc. In this article, we describe the strategy for evaluations and rehabilitation of dysphagia in the ICU.
