  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

To the fold of soft tissues covering the superior pole of the tonsil, which forms base of the Rauber's fossa supratonsillaris and lie above Niki's fossula tonsillares superior, the author proposes a new term, plica tonsillaris. He considers the term heretofore known as plica supratonsillaris as a misnomer for the reason that this plica is composed of combined structures contributed in parts by the tonsil proper, tonsillar membrane and the surrounding mucous membrane. In other words this fold is considered as the tonsil tissue proper and is not a fold of tissue lying above the tonsil.

There are many ways of performing tonsillectomy but, invariably in extra capsular tonsillectomy the initial incision must be placed without the plica tonsillaris. Should this incision be placed within, extracapsular tonsillectomy would become an impossibility.
