Mukuno and Sueyoshi find 14 cases of he-aring disturbances (70%) among 20 patients treated with streptomycin for tuberculosis of the kidneys. Hearing disturbances occured in all cases in whom the use of streptomycin exceeded 60 grams or over. Such disturba-nces began with reception of C6 with a gradual inclusion of C5 and C4; other cases showed a delayed effect with disturbances occurring in the 7th month after the medication had been stopped. The authors opine that, from inve-stigation of other side-reactions that accompa-ny the use of streptomycin and of the quest-ion of inherited weakness that might be effe-cted by parental inter-marriage, the occurr-ence of hearing disturbance may be two fac-tors, one of which in that the blood being taxed with relatively high concentration of streptomycin by poor elimination due to fun-ctional disturbances in the kidneys, and the other, the ear itself may be vulnerable to external attacks by lieu of inherited charact-eristics.
