Awadaguchi says the effect of streptomycin for relief of symptoms in laryngeal tuberculosis is discouraging when the lesion is present in the larynx proper simultaneously with advanced stages of pulmonary tuberculosis. His experie-nce covers 13 cases of this disease in which intramuscular injections of streptomycin were given in total doses ranging from 10 to 40 gra-ms at the rate of 1 gram per day. Streptomy-cin is found effective when it is given early in the course of disease in which tubercular lesions are found in the laryngopharynx and not in the larynx proper, that are ordinarily considered as blood-bourne infections. But, it is found to be most efficacious, regardless of the state of pul-monary conditions, when it is directed against the pain which might be the chief and only ca-use of difficulty of deglutition. Regarding tissue reactions towards the antibiotic, the author believes, it causes decrease of local inflamma-tory edema and encourages prolifertion of con-nective tissues.
