  • Look Inside

We evaluated the effect of 3% solution of taurine on the damage to ocular surface after swimming for 30 minutes in 20 volunteers. The cases were divided into 2 groups. In one group, taurine was instilled, only once, 20 minutes before swimming. In the other group, taurine was additionally instilled immediately after swimming. Taurine was instilled in one eye only, with the fellow eye serving ascontrol. The condition of ocular surface was evaluated by subjective symptoms and slitlampt examination after staining with rose bengal.

When evaluated immidiately after swimming, subjective symptoms were milder in treated eyes. According to objective evaluation after corneal staining, treated eyes showed lesser damage on the ocular suface at 1, 4 and 8 hours after swimming in both groups.
