A drastic change set in around 1983 concerning the therapeutic principles for vernal keratoconjun-ctivitis (VKC). Systemic use of antiallergic agents has become more common intended to suppress release of chemical mediators from mast cells.

We reviewed our cases with VKC during two 5 year periods before 1982 comprising 105 cases (group A) and after 1983 comprising 115 cases(group B).

Both groups were analogous as to the age of onset, extraocular manifestations of atopic status, typing of VKC, or incidence of responsible antigens. Females were more frequent in groups. Females acconted for one fifth in group A and for one third in group B. Also, there was a preponder-ance of females aged 13 to 16 years in group B. There was a sharp decrease in the number of cases treated with longterm systemic corticosteroid in group B, mainly due to more widespread use of systemic antiallergic agents.
