  • Look Inside

Government regulations require that free residual chlorine in swimming pools be between 0.4 and 1.0 mg per liter. The bathing pool before swimming ought to contain chlorine at 50 to 100 ml per liter. We evaluated the possible deleterious effect to the skin and the mucous membrane at these concentra-tions. Experiments with cultivated epidermal ker-atinocytes showed 50% lethal rate at the concentra-tion of 100 mg/l of free residual chlorine. This finding suggests possible skin damage in children with erosions in the buttock or in the genitals. High levels of chlorine for bactericidal effects thus involve untoward possible effects for high-risk persons.
