  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We performed penetrating keratoplasty in 2 eyes using the corneas from a newborn infant with anencephaly who died 12 hours after birth. It was used as therapeutic keratoplasty in a 79-year-old female with protracted corneal ulcer and as optical keratoplasty in a 64-year-old male with bullous keratopathy. The donor corneas were thicker and more flexible than adult donor cornea and required meticulous suturing. There were no further problems during surgery. The grafted cornea showed steepness with 54.50 diopers in K-value of the mean corneal curvature 10 months after surgery and corneal endothelial density of 2,409/mm2 one month later. The postsurgical course has been uneventful in both cases with the grafted cornea staying transparent 11 months after surgery.
