We modified the software of EAS 1000 anterior eye segment analysis system (NIDEK) to quantitate the posterior capsular opacification after cataract surgery. The standard value for densitometry was fixed as the baseline. The average density value was derived from the pixels which have the density of over 16 computer-compatible tapes (CCT). Measurement was performed in 90 eyes comprising 30 eyes each implanted with PMMA, silicone and acrylic soft IOLs. No eye showed posterior capsular opacity clinically in the whole series. With the original software, the average density in the IOLs was 0.9 CCT in the PMMA group, 5.8 for the silicone group and 1.7 for the acrylic soft group. The density of posterior capsule averaged 9.8 CCT in the PMMA group, 10.6 in the silicone group and 9.9 in the acrylic soft group. With the modified software, the density of posterior capsular averaged 22.4, 22.4 and 22.3 CCT respectively in the same order as above. Due to elimination of irregular light scatter, the modified software enabled selective and objective measurement of the posterior capsular density.
