Purpose: To identify the number and location of vortex veins in the living human eye.Method and Material: We used indocyanine green (ICG) fundus angiography with a scanning laser ophthalmoscope, SLO. A panoramic composite angiogram was made by patching together printed angio-grams for each of 220 eyes examined.

Findings: The number of equatorial vortex veins ranged from 4 to 10, average 6.5 per eye. Posteriorly located vortex veins were identified in 26 eyes: 11 in the peripapillary area, 5 in the perifovea and 10 draining directly into the disc. The refraction of these 26 eyes ranged from+0.5D to -20D, average -8.0 D.

Conclusion: There exist more than four vortex veins in the human choroid. Posteriorly located choroidal drainage routes are an occasional physiological feature, particularly in myopic eyes.
