I evaluated the hemodynamics of central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) in regressed stage by indocyanine green angiography in 17 eyes using a scanning laser ophthalmoscope. The series comprised seven ischemic type and 10 non-ischemic type. Retinochoroidal collateral routes were present in 14 eyes with papillary vascular loops and absent in 3 eyes with no vascular loops. The blood in the retinal veins drained through the papillary vascular loops into preferentially dilated choroidal veins. These choroidal veins eventually drained into the vortex vein or veins. The vortex vein collecting the retinal blood was usually located in the nasal hemisphere. The number of the collateral routes ranged from two to six in ischemic type and from one to two in non-ischemic type. This is the first objective proof that venous blood in regressed central retinal vein occlusion drains through papillary vascular loops into choroidal vein or veins.
