  • Look Inside

We studied the peripheral choroid with indocyanine green angiography in 23 normal eyes and 7 with equatorial degeneration. A watershed zone was identified in 21 of the 30 eyes. This zone lay midway between two arterial systems: posteroanterior and anteroposterior ones. The latter was named as “peri-pheral retrograde choroidal arteries (PRCAs)” because of their unique filling pattern. Dye inflow into the PRCAs started consistently later than into short posterior ciliary arteries. There were no functional anastomoses between the two systems. The PRCAs were variable in number and distribution. Some of them appeared to be recurrent vessels of the long posterior ciliary artery. The watershed zone was mainly observed in the temporal peripheral sector and 3.7 mm away from the ora serrata. In no instance was it located as a circular belt along the whole equator. The watershed zone was not correlated with the equatorial degeneration regarding the location or extent. To our best knowledge, this is the first report of arterial watershed zone in the peripheral choroid in living human eyes.
