  • Look Inside

A 37-year-old schizophrenic woman enucleated both eyes by her own fingers while under admission in a psychiatric institution. When seen the same afternoon, both eyelids were free of traumatic wound. Optic nerves and extraocular muscles could not be identified in the orbits. No surgery was performed as bleeding from the wound had stopped by pressuring the orbit as emergency measures. The enucleated eyeballs retained their shape. The optic nerves were dissected at about 25 mm posterior to the eyeballs. This is the second reported case of bilateral autoenucleation in Japan.
