Indocyanine green (ICG) angiography was performed in 19 eyes with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) in its acute stage. In 9 eyes, hyperfluorescence of ICG appeared in the optic disc towards the late phase. In 5 of these eyes, hyperfluorescence persisted throughout the late phase, suggesting dye staining of the venous wall. In the other 4 eyes, it was identified mainly as leakage of ICG dye from the central retinal vein. These eyes showed widespread retinal capillary nonperfusion when seen by fluorescein angiography and were classified as ischemic CRVO. The visual outcome in these 4 eyes was consistently poor. The observed ICG angiographic features correlated well with the severity of CRVO. The findings suggest the value of ICG angiography in assessing the prognosis of CRVO in its acute stage.
