  • Look Inside

We implanted intraocular lens (IOL) made of PMMA in the anterior chamber of 8 rabbit eyes. The surface of the IOL was examined by specular microscopy for 1 to 3 weeks after surgery. The surface of removed IOL was examined thereafter by phase contrast microscopy and scanning elec-tron microscopy (SEM). Specular microscopy showed lamellae of cells on the IOL surface. Fur-ther details of the same cells, including filopodia, could be examined in detail by SEM. As a notewor-thy feature, numerous cells recognized in vivo became detached from the IOL surface during the process of preparation for SEM studies. We empha-size the value of biomicroscopic observation in evaluating the cellular response on implanted IOLs.
