We performed YAG laser capsulotomy in 183 pseudophakic eyes. These eyes accounted for 4% of all pseudophakic eyes. Cataract surgery had been performed by phacoemulsification in 126 eyes and by extracapsular cataract extraction in 57. The ages of the patients averaged 66.6 ±10.0 years. The interval between cataract surgery and capsulotomy averaged 28.6±14.8 months. The visual loss due toopacification of the posterior capsule averaged 0.54 ± 0.20.

The interval between cataract surgery and cap-sulotomy increased along with age in patients from thirties and sixties. After capsulotomy, the visual acuity improved to the best postsurgical level in this group. The interval was shorter in patients over 70 years of age. Recovery of visual acuity was attained in 79.3% after capsulotomy in the latter group.
