Abstract Purpose:According to the current Functional Vision Score(FVS), low-vision persons are to be classified as grade 5 and not as blind. A new proposal for revision was made to the effect that low-vision persons may be classified as grade 2, 3 or 4 when the isopter for Ⅰ/4e is within 15 degrees and the area of visual field is less than 10 degrees.

Case:A 73-year-old male had diabetes since 20 years before, and was treated for diabetic retinopathy and maculopathy 10 years before. Visual acuity was 0.3 right and light perception left. Visual field for Ⅰ/4e in the right eye was less than 80 degrees when the isopters for Ⅰ/4e along the 8 meridians are added together. Visual field could not be tested in the left eye. According to the standard for 2016, he was to be assigned to grade 5. After the proposed revision, he will be assigned to grade 2. Classification of American Medical Association shows that he is to be regarded as profound visual loss, or blind.

Conclusion:The proposed revision on visual field will mean that more patients will be assigned as low vision or blind.
