Abstract Purpose:To report 3 who sought advice regarding eligibility of driving. All the 3 cases were not classified as visually disabled by Japanese law, but they had problems when driving.

Cases:The cases were:a 53-year-old male with glaucoma, a 55-year-old male with retinitis pigmentosa, and a 46-year-old female with pituitary adenoma. They were examined by Functional Vision Score, by standards for driving eligibility in Illinois, by those in UK and Japan.

Results:Functional Vision Score was 67.4 in Case 1. He was graded as Grade 5 in Japan. He was eligible for driving in US, and not in UK or Japan. Functional Vision Score was 54.7 in Case 2. He was not gradable as visually handicapped in Japan. He was eligible for driving in US and Japan, and not in UK. Functional Vision Score was 77.6 in Case 3. She was not gradable as visually handicapped in Japan. She was eligible for driving in US and Japan, and not in UK.

Conclusion:Eligibility for driving may be evaluated either according to Functional Vision Score or UK standard. Functional Vision Score is more sensitive for persons with loss in the central visual field.
