Abstract Purpose:To report the outcome of glaucoma screening in Toyama City for 5 years through 2016.

Case and Clinical Course:This screening program was aimed at adults aged 45, 50 or 55 years who were residents of Toyama City. At the initial stage, they received interview, slit-lamp examination, intraocular pressure measurement, and fundus photography. Findings were then assessed by specialists. Additional tests included visual acuity, gonioscopy, perimetry, and optical coherence tomography. The cost was borne by public health insurance.

Results:Out of eligible 30,277 adults, 2,813(9.3%)joined the program. Additional tests were needed in 646 adults(22.9%)and 584 adults(90.4%)were actually examined. Glaucoma was detected in 105 persons(3.7%), including primary narrow-angle glaucoma in 17% and normal-tension glaucoma in 83%. Glaucoma was detected in 2.6% of adults aged 45 years, 3.0% of adults aged 50 years, and 5.4% of adults aged 55 years.

Conclusion:Adults aged 45, 50 and 55 years were diagnosed with glaucoma at the overall rate of 3.7%. Co-operation of glaucoma specialists and Medical Association of Toyama City was essential in the success of glaucoma screening program.
